Sinhagad Fort is a historic hill fort located near Pune, Maharashtra, and is one of the most significant forts in the region. Originally known as Kondhana Fort, it is situated atop a hill in the Sahyadri mountain range and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and landscapes. The fort has been an important strategic point due to its natural defenses and elevated location.

The fort is best known for the historic Battle of Sinhagad fought in 1670, led by the brave Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare under the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Tanaji sacrificed his life while recapturing the fort from the Mughal forces, after which the fort was renamed Sinhagad, meaning “Lion’s Fort,” in his honor. This battle holds great importance in Maratha history and symbolizes courage and sacrifice.

Apart from its historical value, Sinhagad Fort is also a popular destination for nature lovers and trekkers. Surrounded by greenery, waterfalls, and cool breezes, the fort becomes especially beautiful during the monsoon season. Today, Sinhagad Fort stands as a perfect blend of history, bravery, and natural beauty, attracting tourists, students, and adventure seekers throughout the year.

It is a great place to shop not too far from New York. We took the bus from Port Authority and traveled through the countryside to get there.
