The fort is best known for the historic Battle of Sinhagad fought in 1670, led by the brave Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare under the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Tanaji sacrificed his life while recapturing the fort from the Mughal forces, after which the fort was renamed Sinhagad, meaning “Lion’s Fort,” in his honor. This battle holds great importance in Maratha history and symbolizes courage and sacrifice.
