Lonavala is a popular hill station located near Pune and Mumbai in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra. Known for its scenic beauty, cool climate, and lush green surroundings, Lonavala has been a favored retreat since the British era, when it was developed as a hill station to escape the summer heat. Surrounded by hills, valleys, and waterfalls, it is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the region.
The town is rich in natural and historical significance, with famous attractions such as Bhushi Dam, Lion’s Point, Rajmachi Fort, Karla and Bhaja Caves. The ancient rock-cut caves, dating back to around the 2nd century BCE, reflect the region’s Buddhist heritage and architectural excellence. During the monsoon season, Lonavala transforms into a lush green paradise, attracting nature lovers and photographers.

Lonavala is also well known for its local sweet chikki, made from jaggery and nuts, which has become a symbol of the town. Today, Lonavala serves as a perfect blend of nature, history, and relaxation. Its pleasant weather, serene environment, and proximity to major cities make it a popular destination for tourists, families, and pilgrims throughout the year.

It is a great place to shop not too far from New York. We took the bus from Port Authority and traveled through the countryside to get there.
